Our Founder

At a young age, Rebecca Moran Cusick recognized the deep importance of preserving Mexican cultural traditions — not only as a way to celebrate identity, but also to strengthen community. Her passion for Mexican folkloric dance is rooted in her family’s legacy. Her grandparents, Cresencia and Francisco Rangel, were among the first Mexican migrant families to settle in Minnesota, bringing with them a love for music and dance. Rebecca’s mother continued the tradition by teaching traditional Mexican dances to her seven children, extended family, and friends.

By the age of four, Rebecca was performing at parish celebrations, weddings, quinceañeras, and community events. She later joined Ballet Folklorico Guadalupano, founded by her aunt Maria Moran in the former West Side Flats neighborhood — a formative experience that deepened her connection to dance.

Driven by a desire to expand her knowledge, Rebecca traveled to Mexico City to study at La Academia de la Danza Mexicana del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, under the direction of the legendary Amalia Hernández. She continued her training at Instituto MIZOC, where she developed a close mentorship with Maestro Tizoc Fuentez Yaco.

Upon returning to Minnesota, Rebecca founded Los Alegres Bailadores in 1977. Today, the group is one of the most established Mexican folkloric dance ensembles in the state, with over 100 students ranging from age three to adulthood. Rebecca regularly travels to Mexico to research and archive traditional dances, bringing that knowledge back to her students.

The group’s stunning costumes, authentic music, and diverse repertoire are a direct reflection of Rebecca’s lifelong dedication to keeping the beauty of Mexican folkloric dance alive for future generations.
